Hello Pedestrians!
Earlier this month, Montgomery Planning launched one of the County’s most important planning efforts – the Pedestrian Master Plan. The Scope of Work was presented to the Planning Board and now we are ready to host six community meetings this fall and you are invited!
The Pedestrian Master Plan is a two-year effort to lay the groundwork for a Montgomery County where walking (and rolling using a mobility device) is the most convenient, safest, and most direct transportation choice for short trips for everyone.
The plan is an exciting opportunity to consider all of the things that influence our experience traveling along the County’s pedestrian pathways, and to make improvements.
This means that the plan will do more than just prioritize new and improved sidewalk and crossing projects. It will make policy, design and programming recommendations that deal with how much time pedestrians have to cross streets, shade along our pathways, pathway construction materials, pathway and crosswalk lighting and many other elements that may not be as front and center as the pathways themselves, but play an important role in how comfortable pedestrian trips are and whether they even take place!
Now is an important time in the Pedestrian Plan timeline. Over the next two months, Montgomery Planning will be having a series of six meetings to kick off the plan at locations all across the county.
The first four are below: - October 10 from 7 to 8:15 p.m. at the Olney Library (3500 Olney Laytonsville Road, Olney, MD). RSVP for October 10.
- October 14 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the East County Community Recreation Center (3310 Gateshead Manor Way, Silver Spring, MD). RSVP for October 14.
- October 16 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Regional Services Center (4805 Edgemoor Lane, Bethesda, MD). RSVP for October 16.
- October 21 from 7 to 8:30 at the Montgomery County Planning Department (8787 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, MD). RSVP for October 21.
- RSVPs are encouraged but not required.
As a member of an organization interested making your community a better place, it would be wonderful if you would consider attending a meeting and sharing this information with your neighbors. Your unique pedestrian experience is what will make the plan a success.
Also, look for your fellow pedestrians on Twitter through our #walkinghere campaign as we encourage your neighbors to tell their “walk story” in Montgomery County. Tag @montgomeryplans and use the hashtag #walkinghere.
Sign up for our e-Letter to stay informed about Pedestrian Plan developments.
We look forward to seeing you at an upcoming event! For more information, contact project manager Eli Glazier at 301-495-4548 or eli.glazier@montgomeryplanning.org

Join the Crew; The Compost Crew
Food-waste recycling--otherwise known as “composting” is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint and greenhouse emissions while returning nutrients to our soil and food system.
The Village has partnered with The Compost Crew to provide low-cost household collection of food-waste. The Compost Crew provides each household with an airtight bin and compostable bags; all you have to do is separate your organic waste and leave the bin by your trash and recycling receptacles for collection on the designated day for weekly pick-up. The collected waste is processed at a composting facility in Maryland and, after six months of service, households can request that a portion of your contributed waste be returned in the form of rich, finished nutrient-rich soil.
For more information regarding the household composting collection service, including current rates, please visit the “Food Waste Recycling Program” page on the Village website under Quick Links on the homepage. The more households that sign-up,the cheaper the service is for all, so sign up today!
