FEMA Reschedules Nationwide Wireless
Emergency Alert for October 3

FEMA's Nationwide Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) test originally scheduled for September 20th, has been rescheduled to occur on October 3, 2018.

WEA messages are transmitted through an individual’s cell phone. The WEA capacity is installed by the manufacturers of cell phones. They produce a loud alert signal, which if you haven’t heard it before, could come as a surprise. The alert volume can be controlled by individual cell phone settings. The text message will be: “This is a test. No action is needed.”

New Farmer’s Market Coming Saturdays to the Village of Chevy Chase Section 3

The Village of Chevy Chase Section 3 has partnered with New Morning Farm to offer a Farmer’s Market in the community.  The new weekly Farmer’s Market will launch on Saturday, September 22 and will feature organic fruits, vegetables and more within walking distance of Chevy Chase Village!
When? Saturdays, 8 am - 12:30 pm  (Grand Opening is this coming Saturday, Sept 22nd!). The market will run rain or shine every Saturday morning for 10 months of the year, closing only from March 15 to early June.
Where? On Taylor Street between Georgia Street and Brookville Road (west side of Brookville Road across the street from the Brookville Market) in Section 3.
Who? New Morning Farm is a highly respected organic farmer from Pennsylvania.  Farmer Jim Crawford has been selling produce in the District for 46 years.  He currently has a market at the Sheridan School and also participates in the DuPont Circle Farmers Market.  For more information on New Morning Farm, check out their website:
What? New Morning Farm brings local products from their own farm and from their neighbors in the Tuscarora Organic Growers Cooperative.  You can expect organic vegetables, local fruit, eggs, cheese, bread, and baked goods.
Important Info:

  1. Customers are encouraged to walk or bike to minimize the traffic and parking impacts to the surrounding neighbors.
  2. Bring your own bags.
  3. Please remember to patronize the Brookville Rd. commercial strip when you visit the farmers market. Data from across the country suggest that farmers markets co-located with brick-and-mortar stores increase sales for stores. We want to make sure that this new community asset is a benefit to our beloved long-time vendors, as well as to the neighborhood at-large.

Please spread the word to your friends and neighbors!  It's big news!
See you on September 22nd at the Grand Opening!

New Village Policy:  Memorial/Dedication Benches
in Village Parks and Greenspaces

As noted above, the Village Board has approved a new policy to allow residents of the Village to dedicate a bench in a park or greenspace area in the Village.  Dedication/memorial benches are a way to remember and pay tribute to a resident of the Village, a family member who was a relative of a Village resident, or an individual who has meaningfully contributed to Chevy Chase Village.

The requester works with Village staff to identify a location where a bench can be placed, or currently exists, to be dedicated to an individual.  Benches will feature a modest brass or similar plaque containing a message of the donor’s choosing (the content and size of which is subject to approval by the Village Manager).  Due to the limited number of Village parks and greenspaces, this program will operate on a first-come, first-served basis.  Once a location for a new bench or an existing bench has been identified, the donor shall remit the actual cost, or replacement cost in the case of existing benches, for the bench and the plaque.

To view the full policy and procedures, visit the Village website and click on “Charter,
Code & Policies” from the homepage.

Maryland Launches Senior Call Check Pilot Program

Maryland is the first state in the country to start a free, opt-in, telephonic service to check on Maryland’s older residents, all across the state.

Every day a telephone call will be placed to a participant at a regularly scheduled time. These calls will take place between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. as close as possible to the one-hour time block pre-selected by the participant. If the participant does not answer their first call, they will be tried two more times. If those calls go unanswered, additional calls will be made to notify an alternative person who is selected by the participant during program enrollment. This could be an adult child, a neighbor, or another loved one. The alternate will then be encouraged to check on the older adult program participant.

For more information, visit the Maryland Department of Aging website,, or call the toll-free phone number: 1-800-243-3425.
