Mosquito Numbers Increasing;
Steps Residents Can Take to Control Mosquito Breeding on your Property

 
No, it is not just your imagination.  The spring rains—including the wettest May on record—in our region were a breeding paradise for mosquitos.  The Maryland Department of Agriculture is reporting that mosquitos have multiplied, in some areas to as much as three times their normal numbers.  Aside from just being a nuisance, mosquitos carry diseases such as West Nile and Zika, making these increased numbers and their bites something of legitimate concern for residents. 
 
Below is a list of steps you can take to decrease the mosquito breeding sites on your property:

1. Clean rain gutters to allow water to flow freely.
2. Remove old tires or drill drainage holes in tires used for playground equipment.
3. Store plastic wading pools inside or turn them upside down when not in use.
4. Turn over or remove clay pots and plastic containers.
5. Dispose of all empty beverage containers, plastic wrappers, discarded toys, etc.
6. Check for trapped water in plastic or canvas tarps used to cover boats, pools, etc. Arrange the tarp to drain the water.
7. Pump out bilges in boats. Turn canoes and small boats upside down for storage.
8. Replace water in bird baths at least twice a week.
9. Remove pet food and water dishes that are not being used.
10. Don't leave garbage can lids lying upside down. Be sure water does not collect in the bottom of garbage cans.
11. Flush water in the bottom of plant holders twice a week.
12. Fix dripping outside water faucets.
13. Turn wheelbarrows upside down when stored outside.
14. Check around construction sites or do-it-yourself improvements to ensure that proper backfilling and grading prevent drainage problems.
15. Check ornamental ponds, tree holes and water-holding low areas for mosquito larvae. Call the nearest Mosquito Control Office (see below) if you find, or suspect, mosquito larvae are present.
16. If ditches do not flow and contain stagnant water for one week or longer, they can produce large numbers of mosquitoes. Report such conditions to a Mosquito Control Office. Do not attempt to clear these ditches because they may be protected by wetland regulations.

Stormwater Management and Sump Pump Installations: Confirm Permitting Requirements

 
If the recent historic rainfall has you considering implementing a stormwater management project on your property, please be aware that many stormwater management projects may require a Village Building Permit. A Village Building Permit is required for the installation of drain pipes, drywells, underground rain tanks, flowells, French drains and drainage swales.
 
If you are considering installing or modifying existing stormwater management controls, please contact Ellen Sands, the Village’s Municipal Operations Coordinator, for a review of the proposed work. For residents’ reference and assistance the Stormwater Management presentation materials provided by Montgomery County at the information meeting held at the Village Hall in 2016 are still available on the Village website at http://www.chevychasevillagemd.gov/254/Stormwater-Management-Watershed-RestoratCoordinator.

Brookville Road Park Closed for Improvements

Construction activity has been completed and there are small remaining items that are scheduled to be done during the week of July 9. 

We look forward to opening the park for the public's use next week. Residents are reminded that the dog park portion of Brookville Road Park will operate with specific rules and regulations regarding unleashed dogs. Signs posted at the park contain the full listing of rules and regulations that will be actively enforced.

As we have experienced during various seasonal events, it is important to be prepared for local weather emergencies. In order the assist residents in their preparedness, the Village in partnership with the Montgomery County Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security (OEMHS) offer a number of helpful tools, plans and free alerts to assist and keep you informed.

Village Website and Blast Email System – Have you signed up for the Village’s blast email system? This is primary electronic method of communication with you. The Village has 2 email lists you can sign-up for:

Urgent News Alert – include messages such as criminal activity, neighborhood disruptions such as water main breaks, power outages and road closures and major weather events.

General News Alerts – include messages about Board and committee meetings, community events, changes in public services such as refuse/recycling collection schedules and upcoming road closures.

Alert Montgomery – Alert Montgomery is the office emergency communications service for Montgomery County, MD. During major crisis, emergency or severe weather events, Montgomery County officials will send event updates, warnings and instructions directly to you on any of your devices. To sign-up for Alert Montgomery please visit the OEMHS website www.montgomerycountymd.gov/oemhs and click on the “Alert Montgomery” link at the top of the page.

Family and Community Preparedness Information – Emergencies can take many form and occur with or without warning. By taking a few simple steps now, you can ensure that you, your family and your community are better prepared to handle emergencies. Another important tool the Village has to assist you in your preparedness efforts is to always request a House Check when you are out town and ensure that your emergency contacts are up to date with the Village office.
