Lizard Bites and Street Riots Travel Emergencies and Your Health, Safety and Security
Thursday, February 1, 2018 Chevy Chase Village Hall 7:00 - 8:30 p.m.
Dr. Joyce Johnson will present a lively and entertaining presentation on traveler’s health and safety - interactive and complete with prizes for everyone! The presentation will be based on the award-winning book she co-authored, Lizard Bites and Street Riots, Travel Emergencies and your Health, Safety and Security. Dr. Johnson’s practical discussion will address the basics of:
- Staying healthy both close to home and while traveling (Did you know a rabid fox was recently captured near the Village?)
- Travel insurance (Did you know most travel insurance doesn’t include evacuation? Also, that Medicare doesn’t cover medical expenses outside the US?)
- Safety and security - street riots to hurricanes (And how to survive “survival training” in Antarctica!)
Rear Admiral Joyce Johnson, DO, USPHS (ret) is a physician with a breadth of global public health experience on all seven continents. She has particular interests in third world and polar regions, and public health and disaster relief. Prior to her retirement, RADM Johnson’s last active duty military assignment was the “surgeon general” of the U.S. Coast Guard. She is a professor (clinical and adjunct) at Georgetown University, as well as a prolific writer and popular speaker. Wine and cheese reception following presentation. Please come join your neighbors for some nibbles, drinks and conversation at the Village Hall. A chance to unwind, chat, see friends and make new ones. If you have any questions please contact Mike Marsh (mrm12@ntrs.com)

Seven Unlocked Cars Entered Wednesday Night
Please lock your car every time you park! On Thursday (January 25, 2018) morning, several residents reported that someone had entered their unlocked cars overnight. A pair of expensive sunglasses and a credit card was taken from one car, a debit card was taken from another, and nothing was taken from five of the cars. In one instance, a resident on the east side of the Village reported that she was awakened at 1:00 a.m. by the family dog who was barking aggressively, but she did not investigate further or call the Village Police. It was later learned that a credit card had been stolen from this resident’s car, and investigation revealed that the card had been used three times within 30 minutes after the dog alerted her. The locations of the vehicle entries are as follows: - E. Lenox between Connecticut and Brookville: 3 unlocked cars entered; nothing taken.
- E. Kirke between Connecticut and Brookville: 1 unlocked car entered; nothing taken.
- E. Kirke between Brookville and Nevada: 1 unlocked car entered; sunglasses and credit card taken.
- W. Irving between Magnolia and Cedar: 1 unlocked car entered; debit card taken.
- Hesketh between Magnolia and Cedar: 1 unlocked car entered; nothing taken.

Planning Board Public Hearing on Proposed Changes to the Master Plan of Highways & Transitways: February 15, 2018 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The Montgomery County Planning Board has scheduled a Public Hearing on the comprehensive rewrite of the County’s Master Plan of Highways and Transitways for Thursday, February 15, 2018 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Planning Department’s Headquarters at 8787 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring. In addition to road classification changes, the working draft includes the vision, goals, history and purpose of the plan, improved online tools and resources to improve the ease of use and clarity of the plan for the public, and enhancement of the plan to be more consistent and compliant with the Montgomery County Code. The Public Hearing draft does not include any proposed reclassifications within Chevy Chase Village. Earlier staff recommendations to reclassify Brookville Road and Grafton Street have been completely removed from the Public Hearing draft of the plan, however, reference is made that Brookville Road was removed due to the abundant objections submitted by local residents.
Residents interested in testifying at the February 15 Public Hearing may sign-up online at http://montgomeryplanningboard.org/meetings/signup-to-testify/ beginning on February 5. Comments may also be submitted in writing by email to mcp-chair@mncppc.org. All comments and testimony become a part of the official public record.
The Planning Board intends to transmit its final recommendations to the County Executive and County Council by April 2018. For more information regarding this project, visit: http://montgomeryplanning.org/planning/transportation/highway-planning/master-plan-of-highways-and-transitways/
