Beware of Realistic Kidnapping Scam

Read the Washington Post article at the below link. The scammers put together a scary, realistic ploy that resulted in ‘five hours of hell’ for a frightened, intelligent mother. It ended after they tricked her into wiring thousands of dollars to them—and of course, the ‘kidnapped’ daughter was never in any danger.

Be on guard when your phone rings. Don’t answer if you don’t recognize the number, and don’t allow yourself to fall for this type of evil trick.

Leaf Collection to Begin Next Week Throughout the Village

Starting next week, Village Public Works crews will begin limited leaf collection throughout the Village each day. Given that the leaf collection season is just getting underway there is no set schedule and Public Works crews will be monitoring all streets for pick-ups. Please note that the collection is subject to change due to adverse weather conditions and equipment malfunctions.

Each week, the leaf truck on the west side of the Village will begin on West Melrose Street and work south ending on Western Avenue; and the leaf truck on the east side will begin on East Irving Street working north and ending on Quincy Street.

Residents on Bradley Lane are required to bag their leaves before placing them at the roadside. Bradley Lane leaf bags will be collected throughout the week, as part of your normal yard waste collections. If you bag your leaves, they must be placed in paper bags. Public Works will not pick up leaves that have been bagged in plastic.

Residents and their lawn care contractors are asked to rake their leaves as close to the curb as possible without putting them in the roadway gutter. Please inform your landscape crews of this requirement. Should it rain, leaves piled in the gutter will dam the water causing it to pond. Please avoid boxing in piles of leaves between cars both for easier accessibility for the collection crews and safety for your vehicles.

Sticks and other sharp tree and garden debris should be left loose and placed in separate piles from leaves. Sharp debris can tear the leaf collection hoses or dull the blades, resulting in downtime for the machine to allow for repairs to the vacuum machinery that can cause delays in the schedule.

Leaves on each block in the Village should be collected once per week. Schedule updates will be circulated through the Village’s weekly blast emails.

Voter Registration Deadline for November Election is October 18, 2016

Montgomery County citizens who wish to vote in the 2016 Presidential General Election need to complete and submit their voter registration application no later than Tuesday, October 18, 2016, by 9 PM.

Are you registered to vote? Is your voter registration up to date? Is your current address reflected in your voter registration or make any other changes to your voter registration? Make sure you update your registration prior to October 18, 2016, so you are ready to vote.

Registering to vote requires that you are a US citizen, live in Montgomery County, Maryland, and be at least 18 years of age on or before November 8, 2016.

Download a voter registration application at www.777vote.org to mail to the Board of Elections.

You may also call 240-777-VOTE to verify your voter registration using the automated phone system or visit the office at 18753 N. Frederick Avenue, Suite 210, in Gaithersburg. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM.

Voter registration applications are also available at county libraries, regional service centers, all offices of the Montgomery County Health and Human Services, the State of Maryland Department of Motor Vehicles, and US Post Offices.

Mailed voter registration applications must be postmarked October 18, 2016. Please note, first class mail takes about 5 days to be delivered but it will be processed in time for the November 8, 2016 Election Day.

National Medication Take-Back Event

Chevy Chase Village Police Department will be a National Medication Take-Back Event on Saturday, October 22, 2016 from 10:00-2:00 p.m. in the Village Hall. Please remember that no needles or liquids will be accepted.

County Health Officials Announce Annual Flu Vaccination Campaign; Online Appointment System Available

Montgomery County Health officials announced the dates for the annual flu vaccination campaign and urged residents to get a flu vaccination. Vaccination is the best way to protect against illness during flu season. Seasonal flu will also be circulating in the fall and winter and can cause serious illness.

Seasonal flu vaccinations will be readily available through private health providers, as well as at retail locations throughout the community. County-sponsored seasonal flu vaccination clinics will be held beginning in late October. Check the County’s flu website at www.montgomerycountymd.gov/flu for information on flu vaccination. Anyone not wanting to get the flu should receive the seasonal flu vaccination, particularly the elderly, household members living with children younger than six months of age, health care workers and individuals with chronic illnesses.

Flu shots will be available to individuals 6 months of age and older; schedule appointments on the County’s website (www.montgomerycountymd.gov/flu) or call 311.

There will be three flu shot clinics for healthy, school aged children (ages 3 to 18 years) by appointment only. Flu Mist will not be available.

The best way to prevent seasonal flu is to get vaccinated each year, but good health habits can often help stop the spread of germs and prevent illnesses like the flu. Good health habits include:

Always cover cough or sneeze with a tissue—then throw the tissue away. Or, cough or sneeze into the inside of the elbow.
Wash hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze and before you eat. Alcohol hand sanitizer (minimum 60% alcohol) will help if soap and water are not available.
Avoid touching the eyes, nose or mouth. These are places germs can enter the body easily.
Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick, too.
Monitor yourself and your family for symptoms of fever which include chills, headache, sore throat, cough, body aches, and vomiting or diarrhea.
If you are sick, stay home from work, school or other public places until you are feeling well.

Food Drive: Now - December in the Village Hall

For the fourth year in a row, Chevy Chase Village will partner with the Manna Food Center, the largest food bank in Montgomery County. Over the past 33 years, Manna has distributed 47.3 million pounds of food to more than 2.7 million individuals in need of food assistance. Manna serves approximately 3,700 individuals monthly totaling 11,000 unduplicated households each year. The services of Manna ensure that 21,000 adults and 15,000 children who are experiencing poverty, hunger, and food insecurity will receive essential food supports to help them break the cycle of hunger and food insecurity.

What can you do? We will have a food drop-off at the Village Hall beginning in October through December. When attending Village events (classes, Board Meetings, Fall Social, Halloween Party, Holiday Party…), residents are asked to bring an item to add to the box. Here are some ideas: peanut butter, tuna fish, beans, oatmeal, mac and cheese, pasta, baby food, and shelf-stable milk.

Throughout the fall 2016 leaf collection season, residents are reminded that the Village has limited hours during which landscape power equipment can be operated.

Power landscape equipment is permitted only:
Weekdays between 8:00 a.m. & 6:00 p.m.
Weekends & Holidays between 9:00 a.m. & 6:00 p.m.
