The Administrative office and Public Works Department will be closed on Monday, September 4 in observance of Labor Day. The Communications Center and Police Department remain staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Package and Mail PickupIf you were out of town and requested that your mail and packages be picked up, please remember to contact the Communications Center to collect your items. The Communications Center is available 24/7, and calling ahead to 301-654-7300 helps staff to have your items ready for you when you arrive.

Back to School Safety Tips
for Parents & Children Now that children are back in school, please remember and practice the following important tips: - Don’t drive distracted. Put aside the electronic devices and fully focus on driving. Reading or sending any communication with your smart phone, even while stopped, is very dangerous and will earn you a citation.
- Don’t drive distracted. Five seconds is the average time your eyes are off the road while reading or sending a text. When traveling at 55mph, that’s enough time to cover the length of a football field blindfolded. (www.distraction.gov)
- Don’t drive distracted. Don’t let anything divert your attention and scan the road ahead for pedestrians and bicyclists.
Failure to stop for a stopped school bus with flashing red lights carries up to a $570 fine and three points. Village officers will be increasing patrol of school bus stops to catch violators. If you witness an unsafe driver in the Village, note the tag number and report it to the Village Police Department by calling (301) 654-7300.

Cardboard Box Disposal
Cardboard boxes should be recycled. In order for the boxes to be recycled, all non-paper packing materials must be removed and the boxes should be flattened. Flattened boxes that are approximately less than the size of a small television should be placed with your paper recycling. Five or more flattened boxes should be bundled when left for recycling. Soiled cardboard boxes should be placed in your regular trash.
As a reminder, recycling is collected from homes located WEST of Connecticut Avenue on Wednesdays, and from homes located EAST of Connecticut Avenue on Thursdays.

Meadowlark Music presents a 14-week Baby & Toddler Music class for the Fall season. Click to view the registration form. Completed forms and payments should be returned to the Village Hall by Tuesday, September 5th. A limited number of openings remain.
**Do you currently enjoy a class that you would like to attend closer to home or know an instructor who is looking for a location to hold their classes or ongoing activities such as arts & crafts, music, or language instruction? The Village Hall is a great setting for classes and ongoing activities. The Village is interested in offering new classes for the community to enjoy. Classes can be geared toward adult and child participants and can be a great way to attend your favorite class or activity close to home. September is National Preparedness Month, during which families, businesses, and communities are encouraged to review their preparedness plans to ensure they are prepared in the event of a natural or man-made disaster or emergency.

How to Report Clogged
Storm Drains in the VillageHave you observed clogged or blocked storm drains? The storm drains throughout the Village were installed decades ago by the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC), and then turned over to Montgomery County for ongoing maintenance and service. Thus, requests for service for most Village storm drains should be directed to the county, either through their website or by calling 311 (240-777-0311 from outside of Montgomery County) between 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM, Monday – Friday. According to the county website, a representative will respond to requests for service within five (5) business days. For storm drains along state roads within the Village (Connecticut Avenue and Brookville Road), the State Highway Administration (SHA) provides maintenance service. To report a clogged or blocked storm drain to SHA, visit their website. It is important to remember that leaves are one of the main culprits for clogged storm drains. Leaves and other yard waste should NEVER be placed in the street when awaiting collection.

Special Pickups Reminder
The Public Works Department provides special pickup service of bulk trash each Wednesday. This service is provided to collect those items that are not appropriate for normal trash or recycling such as toys, furniture, televisions and miscellaneous household items. To ensure personnel and equipment safety, the per item maximum weight is 100 pounds. To arrange for a special pickup, please submit an online form or contact the Village Communications Center no later than 2 p.m. on the Tuesday immediately preceding the special pickup collection day.
*Removal of construction or renovation material is the responsibility of the contractor.

RainScapes
Rewards Rebate Program The RainScapes rewards rebate program offers rebates to property owners who install RainScapes techniques to help reduce stormwater runoff from individual properties. Examples include rain gardens, conservation landscapes, green roofs, permeable pavement, pavement removal, and water harvesting. RainScapes can be installed on any kind of property -- private, residential, institutional or commercial. The online portal to apply for a RainScapes rebate reopened on Tuesday, August 1 and will stay open until the maximum limit of applications is received, or until October 15. Most applicants who submit new applications in August should plan for spring 2024 installations. Apply here. For more information, go to DEP’s FAQ page. Announces Selection of
New Police Chief The Board of Managers of Chevy Chase Village announces the appointment of John Nesky, 58, as its new Police Chief, effective October 1, 2023. Chief Nesky, has over 30 years of law enforcement experience, including currently serving as Chief of Police for the Bowie Police Department located in Prince George’s County, Maryland. Chief Nesky will succeed John Fitzgerald, who has announced he will retire this coming fall after twelve years as the Village's Chief. View the entire article on the Village website.

Do You Have a Permit??
Before you begin your project, ensure you have obtained the necessary permits from the Village (and, when applicable, Montgomery County and the Historic Preservation Commission).
When is a Building Permit required? For the installation, replacement or expansion of the following: - Air conditioners, generators and geothermal systems
- Garages, accessory buildings and sheds (of any size)
- Decks, patios and terraces
- Outdoor kitchens and fireplaces
- Fences, gates and walls
- Driveways and walkways
- Lampposts, handrails and freestanding electric vehicle charging stations
- Permanently anchored play equipment
- Swimming pools and outdoor therapeutic baths
- Landscape feature items such as fountains, trellises, and arbors
- Regrading and any work that alters the existing flow of water on a property
(See Sec. 8-5 of the Village Code to review the full list of projects that require a Village Building Permit.)

Report Areas for Repair and Maintenance
Village staff prides itself on being responsive and working hard to ensure that the Village remains a safe, beautiful and welcoming community—but we cannot do it alone. While we are constantly on the lookout for areas that need to be addressed, we need the support of residents serving as our eyes and ears throughout the community:
Sidewalk Repairs
The Village maintains brick paver sidewalks throughout the community. The brick pavers are not mortared and are set on a bluestone base to allow the sidewalks to gradually move as adjacent tree roots grow. Compared to the former concrete sidewalks, the dry-laid brick pavers are much easier for Public Works staff to repair by removing and resetting sections that have shifted. This is ongoing maintenance that our crews perform throughout the year as trip hazards are identified by staff or are brought to our attention by residents.
Tree Maintenance
There are well over 2,500 “public” trees located within Village parks, greenspaces and public right-of-way. The Village’s consulting Arborist and our Director of Public Works perform routine assessments for tree maintenance needs including areas for pruning, removals or treatments to improve a tree’s health. These assessments supplement our ongoing response to observations made by staff and residents.
How to Report an Issue or Concern
Residents can use the Village’s online form system to report any number of issues or concerns, by visiting the Village website and selecting How Do I...Report A Concern. From this page, residents can report sidewalk trip hazards and streetlight outages, and request public tree maintenance and recycling toters.
As always, residents may also call the Village’s 24-hour Communications Center or email requests/concerns to the Village’s main email address at ccv@montgomerycountymd.gov (emails are then routed to the appropriate department).

Join The Compost Crew!The food-waste collection program in Chevy Chase Village continues to grow as the community looks for more ways to be conscientious consumers. Currently, over 100 Village households are recycling their food-waste with Compost Crew. Composting helps to keep tons of waste out of local landfills. To sign up for collection services, or if you have any questions about the program, please feel free to contact info@compostcrew.com or visit the Compost Crew website. NOTE: Those who participate are reminded that compost (as well as trash and recycling) bins are prohibited from being placed at the curbside for collection per the Village Code. Pursuant to Section 10-6 of the Chevy Chase Village Code, all receptacles for the disposal of household garbage, trash and recyclable materials must be left for collection at the rear of the dwelling unit (no curbside collection). Thank you for your cooperation.

An Aging-in-Place Village Do you know that there’s an organization in your neighborhood that helps seniors remain in their own homes safely when they need help doing so? Chevy Chase At Home is a group of neighbors helping neighbors. Volunteers bring needed support to members with a smile.
CC@H offers a rich program of affinity groups, continuing education, socialization, and exercise – many via Zoom, which actually makes it easier for many to participate.

Twin Springs Fruit Farm holds a fruit market in Friendship Heights year-round on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at 4433 South Park Avenue (adjacent to the Friendship Heights Village Center). The market offers a variety of fruits, berries, and vegetables based on their seasonal peak availability.

Access to COVID-19 Test Kits and N-95 Masks;
Vaccine Access & Information
In partnership with Montgomery County, the Village continues to provide COVID-19 rapid (antigen) test kits and N-95 masks at no charge. Test kits are available at the Village Hall with a limit of two (2) boxes per person, per visit while supplies last.
Residents can also obtain free rapid test kits at county libraries during regular operating hours, while supplies last. The nearest is the Chevy Chase Library, located at 8005 Connecticut Avenue, or go online to view the complete list of county library locations. As of June 1, 2023, ordering test kits through covidtests.gov has been suspended and the program is no longer accepting orders. Before you throw out "expired" test kits, please check the FDA website for your brand/lot number, as many test kits' expiration dates have been extended by the FDA. The CDC recommends everyone stay up to date with COVID-19 vaccines and bivalent boosters for their age group: - Children and teens aged 6 months–17 years
- Adults aged 18 years and older
- People who are moderately or severely immunocompromised have different recommendations for COVID-19 vaccines.
