Safe Walking Habits—Walk on the Left Side of the Street!It’s the law—and you’ll be safer!
We often see residents walking in the streets of the Village. In order to increase pedestrian safety, please familiarize yourself with the below ‘rules of the road’ for pedestrians:
State law requires pedestrians to use the sidewalk where one is provided and otherwise available. Please use our sidewalks whenever you can.
When a sidewalk is absent (or its use is impractical for any reason) and pedestrians must walk on the roadway, state law requires that pedestrians walk on the left side of the street—facing oncoming traffic. It is not only the law, but it is common sense for your safety. When pedestrians walk on the right side of the street, they are defenseless and are putting their safety entirely in the hands of the driver approaching from behind. Walking on the left—facing oncoming traffic—enables the pedestrian to see cars as they approach and to move out of the way to avoid injury if the driver is inattentive. The ‘walk-on-the-left’ rule is especially important considering the near silence of electric cars and for those who listen to electronic devices as they walk which reduce a walker’s ability to hear and perceive approaching cars.
Finally, whenever you walk at dusk or in darkness (our days are growing shorter at this time of year), we urge you to wear reflective clothing or a personal safety light. These small flashing LED lights can be strapped to an arm or ankle, or clipped to a belt, backpack or jacket.
Please make safety a priority whenever you take a walk!

October Is Being Celebrated as
‘Energy Action Month’ With Many Events to
Inspire Going Electric and Lowering Energy Costs
October is “Energy Action Month” and Montgomery County, in collaboration with the Montgomery Energy Connection network, is celebrating this year with the theme “Electrify Everything” to focus on going electric inside and around the home.
The County’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), Montgomery County Recreation, the Department of Health and Human Services, Montgomery County Public Libraries and community partners are working together to provide opportunities and information to move to electric energy and lower energy costs.
Throughout the month of October, DEP will be hosting and supporting dozens of Energy Action Month events including lightbulb exchanges, food demonstrations and webinars.

Help Village Staff Keep the Community Safe and BeautifulReport Areas for Repair and MaintenanceVillage staff prides itself on being responsive and working hard to ensure that the Village remains a safe, beautiful and welcoming community—but we cannot do it alone. While we are constantly on the lookout for areas that need to be addressed, we need the support of residents serving as our eyes and ears throughout the community:
Sidewalk Repairs
The Village maintains brick paver sidewalks throughout the community. The brick pavers are not mortared and are set on a bluestone base to allow the sidewalks to gradually move as adjacent tree roots grow. Compared to the former concrete sidewalks, the dry-laid brick pavers are much easier for Public Works staff to repair by removing and resetting sections that have shifted. This is ongoing maintenance that our crews perform throughout the year as trip hazards are identified by staff or are brought to our attention by residents.
Tree Maintenance
There are well over 2,500 “public” trees located within Village parks, greenspaces and public right-of-way. The Village’s consulting Arborist and our Director of Public Works perform a quarterly assessment for tree maintenance needs including areas for pruning, removals or treatments to improve a tree’s health. These quarterly assessments supplement our ongoing response to observations made by staff and residents.
How to Report an Issue or Concern
Residents can use the Village’s online form system to report any number of issues/concerns, by visiting:
https://www.chevychasevillagemd.gov/RequestTracker.aspx. From this page, residents can report sidewalk trip hazards and streetlight outages, and request public tree maintenance and recycling toters.
As always, residents may also call the Village’s 24-hour Communications Center or email requests/concerns to the Village’s main email address at ccv@montgomerycountymd.gov (emails are then routed to the appropriate department).

Temporary Lane Closures on Connecticut Avenue
Near Chevy Chase Lake Drive
The Maryland Transit Administration has announced temporary lane closures in both directions on Connecticut Avenue near Chevy Chase Lake Drive to install brackets and forms for the Purple Line Bridge over Connecticut Avenue,
The closures are occurring during the first two weeks of October. One lane will be closed between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM, and up to two lanes during nighttime work from 7:00 PM to 5:00 AM, beginning September 30, 2022, and continuing through mid-October.
Expect traffic delays resulting from these closures.

‘Walktober’ Events Promote Walking and Pedestrian Safety in Montgomery County Throughout OctoberThe Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) is partnering with the State of Maryland and local municipalities to celebrate “Walktober” with a series of activities in October promoting the State’s official exercise: walking. The month-long campaign highlights the safety and health of pedestrians. Walktober also highlights the importance of County pedestrian infrastructure projects.
MCDOT will be hosting a series of outreach events throughout the county designed to highlight the importance of walking. Walktober events will include: - Walk to School Day. The internationally recognized event will be held Wednesday, October 12. The MCDOT Safe Routes to School (SRTS) team will be at Wheaton Woods Elementary School to promote biking and pedestrian safety and encourage all students who have a safe path and live near their elementary school to walk to school on this date. - Pedestrian Safety Outreach. The SRTS team will be at various locations throughout the month to promote pedestrian and bicycle safety and talk with residents about recent safety improvements, including infrastructure projects and pedestrian hybrid beacons. View details on the calendar here.
MCDOT aims to improve walkability by making improvements in pedestrian safety so that walkers and bikers get to their destinations safely.

Child and Adult Used Bicycles Can Be Donated at the County’s Annual Department of Transportation Event on Friday, October 14, in RockvilleBicycles that are no longer being used by some can make a big difference for others. The Montgomery County Department of Transportation’s annual Bicycle Donation Drive on Friday, October 14, will make it easy to donate previously owned bikes and ensure they will have a continued impact.
MCDOT is sponsoring the collection of child and adult bikes in partnership with Rockville Bike Hub and Bikes for the World. From 7 a.m.-2 p.m. on October 14, bikes will be collected (rain or shine) outside of the Montgomery County Council Office Building Garage at East Jefferson and Monroe Street in Rockville.
Bicycles should be in good working condition or in need of only minor repairs. Rockville Bike Hub volunteers will refurbish the bikes and MCDOT will place them with low-income children and adults in the County through the MCDOT Bike Match Program or through the Rockville Terrific Kids program.
The bike donation event also will be accepting donations by check. Checks can be made out to the Rockville Bike Hub and left with staff at the donation site. Donations are tax-deductible.

Vaccine Clinic at the Village HallWednesday, October 19, 4-6 PMThe Village will host our annual vaccine clinic on Wednesday, October 19 in partnership with Chevy Chase@Home and Giant Pharmacy. Vaccines will be offered for the flu and pneumonia, hepatitis-B, as well as boosters for COVID-19, shingles and tetanus.
Pre-registration is required. Visit the Village website or click here to make your appointment. Participants must also complete and bring a consent form and if getting a 2nd shot or booster, a COVID attestation form. These forms are also available at the Village Hall.

Fall Leaf Season Reminder:
Gas-Powered Leaf Blowers are
Banned in the VillageResidents may be starting to schedule and coordinate their landscaper or yard maintenance contractor to clear fallen leaves. As you do, it is important to remind your contractors of the Village's ban on the use of gas-powered leaf blowers. This will be the first leaf collection season since the ban went into effect, January 1, 2022.
Residents and landscapers are reminded that ALL blowers operated within the Village remain subject to Montgomery County’s Noise Ordinance. The county’s Noise Ordinance states that “a person must not...use a leaf blower at any time that has an average sound level exceeding 70 dBA at a distance of 50 feet.” Additionally, the simultaneous use of multiple leaf blowers that are compliant with the 70 dBA limit can create noise of a sufficient level to qualify as a violation and/or noise disturbance.

COVID Vaccines, Testing, and MasksEveryone 12 and Older Eligible for
New Bivalent Booster Shot
Governor Hogan announced on Friday, September 2, that state health officials have formally authorized new single-dose bivalent boosters for COVID-19 following approval by both the FDA and the CDC. Federal and state health officials are recommending that everyone 12 and older get this updated shot from Pfizer for individuals age 12 years and older and from Moderna for individuals age 18 years and older.

The Village continues to provide rapid (antigen) test kits and N95 masks. Village residents may stop by the Village office to pick-up up masks and test kits. Read more about mask and test distribution at the Village Hall and other means of accessing COVID-19 tests.
The rapid COVID test kits distributed by the Village are manufactured by iHealth. In July, the FDA extended the expiration date printed on the iHealth boxes by an additional three months. To confirm the applicable expiration date for your test kit, visit https://ihealthlabs.com/pages/news.
Montgomery County offers free COVID-19 testing and urges those doing at-home tests to report their results.

Latex Paint Disposal PolicyEffective ImmediatelyWet latex paint is not hazardous waste. Cans should be left open to dry and then disposed of in your regular household trash. We are receiving an increase in requests for hazardous waste pickups including latex paint, which is not permitted. We have established a clear procedure for residents to follow. Join The Compost Crew Today!
The food-waste collection program in Chevy Chase Village continues to grow as the community looks for more ways to be conscientious consumers. Currently, over 95 Village households are recycling their food-waste with Compost Crew. As a result of increased participation, the price per household for Compost Crew’s convenient food-waste collection is $16 per month for the standard size bin--a 20% savings from the previous cost. The monthly cost for the larger 12-gallon bins is $20/month.

Twin Springs Fruit Farm holds a fruit market in Friendship Heights year-round on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at 4433 South Park Avenue (adjacent to the Friendship Heights Village Center). The market offers a variety of fruits, berries, and vegetables based on their seasonal peak availability.

The market is open on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (rain or shine). The Market has designated 9:00-9:30 a.m. for vulnerable customers, then 9:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. for all!
