National Park Service’s Proposal for
the Future of Beach Drive
Proposal to Maintain Vehicle Closure
Memorial Day through Labor Day & Weekends
The upper portion of Beach Drive through Rock Creek Park has been closed to vehicles since spring of 2020. The National Park Service (NPS) has been studying whether to maintain the closure. The NPS has issued a proposal to maintain a seasonal closure to motorized vehicles: close the upper portion of Beach Drive NW to motorized vehicles from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, opening this section to vehicles during the remainder of the year.
On July 18, NPS staff hosted a virtual public meeting regarding the seasonal closure proposal. A recording of the meeting can be viewed at https://www.nps.gov/media/video/view.htm?id=BA95BAA7-DA56-4A85-8DA0-64D52221F62D
Residents are encouraged to review the Environmental Assessment and Traffic Study (continued diversion of traffic onto Connecticut Avenue, Brookville Road and East West Highway—among other local roadways—is projected under this plan).
