Right-to-Life Demonstrators Expected Next Tuesday On Tuesday, July 26, an anti-abortion group, Defend Life, will be exercising their 1st Amendment rights by displaying large, graphic signs on the sidewalk along northbound Connecticut Avenue from 4:00pm-6:00pm. Chief Fitzgerald and Village officers will be on the scene keeping the peace and ensuring traffic and pedestrian safety. The images on the signs can be upsetting to some, and young children may not understand them. Also, traffic tends to back up on northbound Connecticut Avenue during the hours of the demonstration. If you typically use northbound Connecticut Avenue in your travels, you may want to consider an alternative route next Tuesday between 4:00pm and 6:00pm.

Thrive Montgomery 2050: Community QuestionnaireThe Montgomery County Council is moving forward with its review of Thrive Montgomery 2050, the rewrite of the county’s general plan. In response to the council’s Office of Legislative Oversight’s (OLO) review of Thrive 2050 this past spring, the County Council decided to seek additional input from underrepresented residents. As a result, the County Council solicited proposals for conducting additional community outreach and for developing a new Thrive chapter on racial equity. At its June 19, 2022 meeting, the County Council announced the selection of Nspriregreen to do this work. Here is a link to a flyer that explains more about Nspiregreen's plan for gaining additional input. A July 19 notice from Montgomery Planning invites residents to “add your voice to this part of the Thrive 2050 process by completing Nspiregreen's questionnaire” which is now available online. Please review the questionnaire and reach out to neighbors and friends who may not be aware of Thrive to suggest that they fill out this questionnaire too. Participation in this questionnaire will be strictly confidential and completion is expected to take approximately 8 minutes. Upon completing the survey, you will have a chance to enter a raffle to win one of the 300 gift cards ($10 and $50). In addition to adding a new chapter on racial equity, County Council Staff is concurrently working on adding chapters to Thrive that will specifically address economic growth and environmental strategies. It is expected that the County Council will resume its review of Thrive in September and will likely vote on its adoption in October. To learn more about Thrive 2050, visit Montgomery County Council's website.

Montgomery County Launches ‘Reducing Food Waste Begins with You’ Campaign
The Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has launched an educational awareness campaign to provide residents, businesses and organizations with ways to reduce the estimated 124,000 tons of food scraps that are thrown away every year in the County. The "Food Is Too Good to Waste--Reducing Food Wasted Begins With You" campaign includes a public service announcement entitled Reducing Food Waste Begins With You. Food waste generally comes from:
- Excess or unwanted food that can still be eaten but is not.
- Food scraps generated as food is being prepared at home.
- Food scraps generated as food is prepared at restaurants, cafeterias, hotels, hospitals and other businesses or facilities.
- Food that is believed to be expired, or past its “sell by,” “best by,” or “best if used by” dates.
- Foods that have marks or blemishes on them.
- Unused food from farms such as unharvested crops.
Among the ways to reduce food waste are: - Plan meals in advance.
- Make a shopping list and check expiration dates on the items purchased.
- Cook the food you buy.
- Cook smaller portions to cut down on the amount of leftovers.
- Save extra food in reusable containers and add a label listing the contents and the date before storing in the refrigerator or pantry.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says: “food waste is one of the largest streams of material in American trash.” To learn more about reducing food waste, visit https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/SWS/foodwaste/food-waste.html. Additional information also available by contacting Eileen Kao at 240-777-6406 or Eileen.kao@montgomerycountymd.gov. Locally, Village residents are encouraged to participate in our food-waste collection program with The Compost Crew. See the following article for information.

National Suicide Prevention and Veterans’ Crisis Hotline: 988Beginning July 16, the United States will have a new emergency number -- 988 -- for anyone experiencing a mental health crisis or considering suicide. Calling that number connects the caller to professionals who can help avert a crisis. In 2020, the FCC ordered all telecom providers to make every land line, cell phone, and every voice-over internet device in the United States capable of using the number 988 by July 16, 2022. The National Suicide Hotline Designation Act of 2020 established by law the number ‘988’ as the new nationwide suicide prevention lifeline and veterans’ crisis line phone number. Village Resident Offering Battery-Power Mower Repair Assistance
Ollie Davidson (Oliver Street), a member of the Village’s Environment & Energy Committee, has offered to help neighbors who have a battery-powered mower that may not be in good working condition. As the Village moves toward becoming a quieter neighborhood with the now in effect ban on the use of gas-powered blowers, Ollie is offering to look at any non-working battery mower to identify if it can be (easily) rehabilitated. If so, he can return it to the resident or offer the rehabbed machine to a small lawn service operator.
If you would like some assistance with your old battery-powered mower, Ollie is happy to discuss your options (this offer does not include gas-powered mowers). If you are interested, please reach out to Ollie Davidson directly at PPPartners@comcast.net.

COVID Testing, Masks, and VaccinesWith COVID cases on the rise in our region and nationally, it is important that we remain vigilant in our efforts to stop the spread of the virus which continues to kill the most vulnerable in our communities. Montgomery County issued a PRESS RELEASE earlier this month with tips to protect against further community spread of the virus.
Testing and Masks The Village continues to provide rapid (antigen) test kits and N95 masks. Village residents may stop by the Village office to pick-up up masks and test kits. Read more about the mask and test distribution at the Village Hall and other means of accessing COVID-19 tests.
The rapid COVID test kits distributed by the Village are manufactured by iHealth. The FDA has extended the expiration date printed on the iHealth boxes by three months. EX: If your kit has an expiration date in June, they are now good until September. For more information, visit https://ihealthlabs.com/pages/news. Montgomery County offers free COVID-19 testing and urges those doing at-home tests to report their results.
Vaccines The U.S. Food and Drug Administration amended the emergency use authorization (EUA) for the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine, authorizing the use of a single booster dose for administration to individuals 5 through 11 years of age at least five months after completion of a primary series with the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine. To learn more, click here to visit the FDA website.
Children ages 6 months and older are now eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gave approval last week. Parents should check with their child's pediatrician for additional guidance.
Montgomery County has begun vaccinating children ages 6 months to 5 years old at county clinics by appointment only. COVID-19 vaccinations for individuals ages 5 and up remain available across the state and county.

Alert Your Landscapers: Gas-Powered Leaf Blowers are Banned in the VillageA ban on the use of gas-powered leaf blowers went into effect January 1, 2022. Residents and landscapers are reminded that ALL blowers operated within the Village remain subject to Montgomery County’s Noise Ordinance. The county’s Noise Ordinance states that “a person must not...use a leaf blower at any time that has an average sound level exceeding 70 dBA at a distance of 50 feet.” Additionally, the simultaneous use of multiple leaf blowers that are compliant with the 70 bDA limit can create noise of a sufficient level to qualify as a violation and/or noise disturbance. Residents are responsible for discussing these restrictions with their yard maintenance crews. Click here for more information.
