National Park Service Issues Proposal
for the Future of Beach DriveRecommendation to Maintain Vehicle Closure
Memorial Day through Labor DayThe upper portion of Beach Drive through Rock Creek Park has been closed to vehicles since spring of 2020. The National Park Service (NPS) has been studying whether to maintain the closure. This week, the NPS issued a proposal to maintain a seasonal closure to vehicles: close the upper portion of Beach Drive NW to motorized vehicles from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, opening this section to vehicles during the remainder of the year.

Residents are encouraged to review the Environmental Assessment and Traffic Study (continued diversion of traffic onto Connecticut Avenue, Brookville Road and East West Highway—among other local roadways—is projected under this plan).

National Suicide Prevention and Veterans’ Crisis Hotline: 988Beginning July 16, the United States will have a new emergency number -- 988 -- for anyone experiencing a mental health crisis or considering suicide. Calling that number connects the caller to professionals who can help avert a crisis.
In 2020, the FCC ordered all telecom providers to make every land line, cell phone, and every voice-over internet device in the United States capable of using the number 988 by July 16, 2022. The National Suicide Hotline Designation Act of 2020 established by law the number ‘988’ as the new nationwide suicide prevention lifeline and veterans’ crisis line phone number.

Proposed Dog Park at Willard Avenue Neighborhood Park
Community Invited to attend Virtual Community Meeting
Regarding Proposed DevelopmentMontgomery Parks, part of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, invites the public to participate in a virtual community meeting to discuss the development of a proposed dog park at Willard Avenue Neighborhood Park. Montgomery Parks staff will present information about the proposed dog park and encourage input and questions from meeting attendees. Village Resident Offering
Battery-Power Mower Repair AssistanceOllie Davidson (Oliver Street), a member of the Village’s Environment & Energy Committee, has offered to help neighbors who have a battery-powered mower that may not be in good working condition. As the Village moves toward becoming a quieter neighborhood with the now in effect ban on the use of gas-powered blowers, Ollie is offering to look at any non-working battery mower to identify if it can be (easily) rehabilitated. If so, he can return it to the resident or offer the rehabbed machine to a small lawn service operator.

COVID Testing, Masks, and VaccinesWith COVID cases on the rise in our region and nationally, it is important that we remain vigilant in our efforts to stop the spread of the virus which continues to kill the most vulnerable in our communities. Montgomery County issued a PRESS RELEASE earlier this month with tips to protect against further community spread of the virus.
Testing and Masks
The Village continues to provide rapid (antigen) test kits and N95 masks. Village residents may stop by the Village office to pick-up up masks and test kits. Read more about the mask and test distribution at the Village Hall and other means of accessing COVID-19 tests.
The rapid COVID test kits distributed by the Village are manufactured by iHealth. The FDA has extended the expiration date printed on the iHealth boxes by three months. EX: If your kit has an expiration date in June, they are now good until September. For more information, visit https://ihealthlabs.com/pages/news.
Montgomery County offers free COVID-19 testing and urges those doing at-home tests to report their results.
Vaccines
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration amended the emergency use authorization (EUA) for the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine, authorizing the use of a single booster dose for administration to individuals 5 through 11 years of age at least five months after completion of a primary series with the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine. Children ages 6 months and older are now eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gave approval last week. Parents should check with their child's pediatrician for additional guidance.
Montgomery County has begun vaccinating children ages 6 months to 5 years old at county clinics by appointment only. COVID-19 vaccinations for individuals ages 5 and up remain available across the state and county.

Alert Your Landscapers:
Gas-Powered Leaf Blowers are
Banned in the VillageA ban on the use of gas-powered leaf blowers went into effect January 1, 2022.
Residents and landscapers are reminded that ALL blowers operated within the Village remain subject to Montgomery County’s Noise Ordinance. The county’s Noise Ordinance states that “a person must not...use a leaf blower at any time that has an average sound level exceeding 70 dBA at a distance of 50 feet.” Additionally, the simultaneous use of multiple leaf blowers that are compliant with the 70 bDA limit can create noise of a sufficient level to qualify as a violation and/or noise disturbance.

Join The Compost Crew Today!
The food-waste collection program in Chevy Chase Village continues to grow as the community looks for more ways to be conscientious consumers. Currently, over 80 Village households are recycling their food-waste with Compost Crew. As a result of increased participation, the price per household for Compost Crew’s convenient food-waste collection is $16 per month for the standard size bin--a 20% savings from the previous cost. The monthly cost for the larger 12-gallon bins is $20/month.
