Maryland Department of Transportation Issues
“Needs Analysis” Report for Connecticut Avenue
-Report Includes What Could Be Significant Changes along the Corridor-
The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) recently completed an analysis of Connecticut Avenue—MD Route 185—from Chevy Chase Circle to University Boulevard. SHA has issued a “Needs Analysis” report including short- and long-term recommendations to “balance the needs” of drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians along the corridor. In the long-term, the report outlines significant changes to Connecticut Avenue, south of East-West Highway, including an operational evaluation to determine if elimination of a travel lane in either direction is suitable to provide space for buffered bike lanes, widening of the remaining two travel lanes in each direction, and dedicated left-turn lanes.
Our District 18 General Assembly Delegation has scheduled a Community Meeting for Wednesday, April 13 from 6:00-7:30 p.m. regarding the section of the plan from Chevy Chase Circle to Jones Bridge Road (a second meeting will be held on April 14 for the section of Connecticut Avenue located north of Jones Bridge Road). This meeting will include a presentation from SHA representatives regarding the Needs Analysis and comments from our state elected officials.
Most importantly, the meeting will include an opportunity for residents to ask questions, provide feedback, and learn how SHA intends to use and implement the report’s recommendations. A recording of the meeting will be posted to the Village website and circulated in subsequent weekly blast emails. Residents can submit questions even if they are unable to attend the meetings.
