Dry Wells and Their Maintenance If you have dry wells (underground receptacles for stormwater runoff) on your property as part of a stormwater management system, it’s important to know that these underground retention pits require ongoing maintenance—“out of sight” should not be “out of mind”! Debris from gutters (leaf litter and such) can cause clogging of the gravel retention area, and even above ground, it is important not to block the overflow cap or to build on top of the drywell.
If you notice that the area around your dry well is soggy, or worse, if the overflow cap seems to activate at the least amount of rain, then it probably means your system is due for a cleaning. Generally, every three to five years the gravel containment area needs to be flushed out, to eliminate sediment and debris that can hamper performance. This process is often referred to as “refreshing” the dry well. If this maintenance is neglected, the well will not function and you will experience adverse impacts to your yard and possibly to your basement.
Check with the company that installed the system, or if it was in place when you purchased your home, many landscape companies can perform this service. Keeping your dry wells in good condition will go a long way to improving the stormwater management conditions in your yard. Here is a link to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s website [a] with information on dry wells and their maintenance, as well as link to the Montgomery County website [b] with information on dry wells in general, their sizing and location.
Note that installation of a dry well on your property does require a Chevy Chase Village Building Permit. Permitting & Code Enforcement Coordinator Ms. Jessica Gebhart can assist you with the permitting process. Woman Found Dead on Park Bench on the DC Side of Chevy Chase CircleCause is unknown at this time; DC and US Park Police are investigating
Shortly before 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 8, 2020, a resident was taking a walk in the Village when a young man who was unknown to the resident informed her that he had seen a woman slumped over on a bench within Chevy Chase Circle. The young man told the resident that he thought the woman on the bench was either sick or dead, and the man requested that the resident call the authorities.
The resident walked to the Village Hall and relayed the information to the dispatcher in the Communications Center. Village officers and Fire/Rescue units responded right away, and once on the scene, they quickly determined that the woman on the bench was dead. There was no obvious sign of trauma on the woman’s body. The woman appeared to be of middle age, and there were indications that she was homeless.
Village officers determined that the woman’s body was in the District of Columbia, so they requested that the Metropolitan Police (DC) and the U.S. Park Police respond to the scene (the interior of the Circle belongs to the Department of the Interior, National Park Service). Those agencies will be conducting the investigation.

Preparing for Halloween During COVID-19 This is the time of year when our littlest residents are looking forward to the special night in late October when they can dress up and trick-or-treat throughout the community. With the COVID-19 pandemic’s mark still being felt throughout our region, Halloween is the latest cherished tradition to be impacted. As announced last month, the Village Halloween Party has been canceled, however, we know that many families are seeking guidance regarding COVID-safe trick-or-treating. We anticipate that many households will simply choose not to participate in trick-or-treating activities due to the increased risk of interacting with others and the difficulty of ensuring there is no cross-contamination. Montgomery County’s Office of Emergency Management has issued guidance for county residents regarding Halloween. Please click the link below to view this guidance:
https://www2.montgomerycountymd.gov/mcgportalapps/Press_Detail.aspx?Item_ID=26894 Village residents—including ghosts and goblins—are reminded to avoid crowds this holiday and to always wear a mask when unable to maintain a social distance of at least six feet.
