Chief of Police
Chevy Chase Village, Maryland, located in Montgomery County and abutting the northwestern corner of the District of Columbia, is a quiet, century-old incorporated suburban community with a stable population of 2,000. The Village is seeking a successor to its highly regarded Police Chief who is retiring after 12 years. The Chief supervises ten sworn officers. The Department is supported by a civilian Public Safety Coordinator and five civilian communications clerks who staff a resident call line 24 hours a day.
Candidates for Police Chief must have at least 15 years of police experience in a variety of assignments, at least 5 years of which must be as a senior administrator or commander. The ideal candidate will have experience in and/or existing relationships with police leaders in Montgomery County, Maryland. Candidates must hold at least a bachelor’s degree from a nationally accredited college or university in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Political Science or similar fields, and preferably a master’s degree in those fields or in Business Administration. Graduation from a criminal justice-related management program is also desirable.
The new Chief will be responsible for all aspects of police operations, including officer supervision, training and discipline. The Chief will be expected to work closely and collaboratively with the Chevy Chase Village Board of Managers, the Montgomery County Police Department and the District of Columbia Police. The Chief also will participate in patrolling the community when time and responsibilities permit.
Candidates must be adept in the use of current law enforcement technologies such as electronic surveillance, electronic communication and digital record keeping. The Chief is expected to prepare and manage the department’s annual budget of approximately $2.3 million. Depending on experience and qualifications, the starting salary will range from $130,000 to $150,000 a year. The position also provides comprehensive health, disability, and pension benefits. The Board of Managers appoints the Chief. While subject to the Board Chair’s oversight, the Chief reports directly to the Village Manager.
