Western Grove Park Development
On May 22, the Montgomery County Council unanimously approved funding in the County’s FY2015 capital budget for the final design and construction of the Western Grove Park. In partnership with the County, the Village Board of Managers has pledged to provide a 25% level of effort in funding to expedite the development of the Western Grove Park.
Now that funding has been approved for the park, Village and Park & Planning staffs are currently working to finalize design plans for construction and permitting. Construction on the park is anticipated to begin in late winter 2015. The Western Grove Urban Park is located between Grove Street and Western Avenue in the southwest corner of the Village, adjacent to Chevy Chase Center.
When complete, the park will provide residents with a tranquil park with a true urban vibe. The park will include the following: two hard surface lighted walking paths; a naturalistic children’s play area with stepping stone boulders, log seats, and a living hut of bent branches and a human sundial; low ornamental fencing along the Western Avenue frontage amidst a grove of existing trees to safely prevent children from dashing out into Western Avenue; a seating area with moveable furniture and water feature, and Wi-Fi access.
While we await construction of the park’s amenities, THE PARK IS OPEN and residents of the Village and surrounding communities are welcome and encouraged to use this wonderful area. A copy of the full facility plan for the Western Grove Park is available by clicking on the below.
Please stay tuned to the Village website and Crier for further updates.
Over the past year, the Village's Chevy Chase Open Space Committee has been working the Park& Planning staff to develop a concept plan for the park. Now that the concept plan has been drafted community feedback is sought on the plan and to develop a list of features the community feels are priorities for implementation.
Over the past couple months Maryland-National Capital Park & Planning Commission Crews and Contractors have been working to clean up the Chevy Chase Open Space property (formally known as the Wohlfarth property) to remove non-native invasive shrubs, vines and small trees and to improve site lines into and out of the park.
The property looks much better now, and, as a result, many more people are using it—with positive and negative consequences. In order to counter any negative uses, the Village is modifying its patrolling and monitoring of the property. We are asking Village residents to help us by contacting the Village Communications Center to report any suspicious behavior that you observe, as well as any other negative uses of the property.
Thank you for your support as we work toward making this property a valued asset for all Village residents to enjoy.

The first Chevy Chase Open Space Visioning Meeting for the park located on the west side of the Village will be held on June 15, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. in the Village Hall. This is an opportunity for residents to get involved in the design of the park.
Additionally, the Village is in the process establishing a small committee of citizens to serve as a liaison between the Village and the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission
(M-NCPPC) as we work through this Concept Plan process and beyond. Other municipalities have established such committees when partnering with M-NCPPC on parks in their jurisdictions and they have been very helpful in streamlining the collaboration process. Included in this 5-person Committee will be Village staff liaison Michael Younes. If you are interested in serving on this Committee, please contact Mr. Younes a firstname.lastname@example.org or (301) 654-7300.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Brenda Sandberg, Legacy Open Space Program Manager, Montgomery Parks, at email@example.com or 301-650-4360.
As the Village works with Park and Planning to develop the Chevy Chase Open Space Urban Park, updates, news and information will be posted to this page including dates for community design charrettes.
